"Red Riding Hood" is a European folk tale about a little girl who met a wolf. The tale was adapted in literary form by Charles Perrault and then rewritten by Brothers Grimm.
The story of a girl deceived by a wolf has been widespread in France and Italy since the Middle Ages. The tale has been known since at least the 14th century and was especially popular in the alpine foothills and in Tyrol. The contents of the basket varied: the granddaughter brought fresh fish to her grandmother in northern Italy, cheese in Switzerland, a pie and a pot of butter in the south of France.
The first literary version of this old folk tale was published by Charles Perrault in 1697 in Paris - in the book "The Tales of My Mother Goose, or The Stories and Tales of Bygone Times with Teachings", dedicated to the princess of the French royal house. Perrault took one of the variations as a basis, dressed the nameless girl in a cap made of scarlet velvet and gave her a name - Little Red Riding Hood. I must say that in France at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries, when social differences in clothing were strictly regulated, such headdresses were worn only by aristocrats and women of the middle class. A simple country girl who easily walked in a velvet cap of a defiant color and even contrary to the orders of her mother and talked with a stranger clearly understood a lot about herself, which wasn’t supported in the harsh era of the Enlightenment. In the finale the wolf taught a cruel lesson to all the windy young ladies: he pounced on Little Red Riding Hood and swallowed her. The version of the tale that became a classic one in modern children's literature was written by the Grimm brothers a century after the death of Perrault.
